What is SpellRead?

SpellRead is a unique science-based phonological auditory training program for struggling readers. The program focuses on phonological automaticity and reading fluency while providing explicit comprehension and vocabulary instruction. Aligned with current reading research and backed by independent research, SpellRead provides an integrated, multi-sensory approach that builds a student’s sound system and then bridges it with students’ oral language.

Who needs SpellRead?
SpellRead is designed for the most struggling readers of any age, grade school students, college students, and adults. It is recommended for ESL students, Dyslexic students.

What happens with SpellRead?
The end goal is to close the gap and move skills to a point where they are at or above grade level within a year and to ensure these skills are sustainable. The SpellRead program doesn’t just promise results, it delivers results.

What happens without SpellRead?
Without SpellRead, students who struggle will continue to struggle throughout the grades. They will rely on compensatory strategies to get by in school. However, as texts become increasingly difficult, they fall further behind. This will lead to a cycle of failure that affects all areas of their life: self-confidence, self-worth, esteem, grades, and choice of career.

The good news is that SpellRead can end the cycle of failure, repair the foundation ….mastering the phonological coding system to a level of automaticity provides a strong reading foundation for treading in all content areas.

Why does SpellRead work?
SpellRead uses a multi-sensory approach to bridge a student’s sound system and oral language to build automaticity and train the brain to efficiently process language for understanding. Once a student had gone through SpellRead, the student will have the skills they need to improve overall comprehension and can confidently advance to more complex texts in all content areas!

How long does the program take?
The SpellRead program consists of 105 sequential lessons broken down into three phases and usually takes an average of one year based on duration and frequency of session: Success at each lesson and phase of the SpellRead program is dependent on mastery of the preceding lessons and levels. As students’ word-level skills, fluency, automaticity, vocabulary, and comprehension develop, the emphasis, content, pacing, and complexity of reading instruction modulates over time. As word-reading efficiency is gained, the contribution of active decoding effort decreases (because it has become automatic) and the contribution of background knowledge, vocabulary, and broader language skills increases.

What is taught in each Phase?
Phase A provides the foundation for the SpellRead program, training the auditory processing function of the brain to hear and manipulate the 44 sounds of English so that students develop a “sound processing reflex” – automatically and directly recognizing each sound without needing to make associations with rules that hinder automaticity.

Phase B builds on this foundation, teaching secondary spellings, consonant blends, syllabication, and auditory/visual automaticity to the two-syllable level.

Phase C continues the development of fluency with polysyllabic words and introduces the most common clusters (such as “tion” in “invention”) as well as, pronunciation and spelling of verb forms. Phase C is intensely language oriented and students apply their cumulative word-level knowledge from phases A and B.
